Personal Statement
My name is Richard Channing Joyner III and I am a senior at West Johnston High School. I think of myself as an outgoing, hardworking, and responsible young man that is determined to strive for excellence. I am a Christian and currently am a member of Angier Baptist Church. I have been a member of my church for 12 years and over time have learned how to be a man of Christ. One of my most cherished memories was with my church youth group. We arranged for our group to take part in a mission’s project called Mission Serve. We traveled by bus to East Carroll, Louisiana and we spent one week working on houses in the community for the less fortunate. We power washed houses, scraped off old paint, painted the houses, replaced roofing, built handicapped ramps for the homeowners that needed them, cleaned up the homeowner’s land and pulled trees and bushes that were in the way. We had well over a hundred volunteers and completed 15 projects throughout the week. One of my responsibilities in my group was the Chaplin. I took this role during my last two mission trips and was responsible for leading devotion during our lunch break every day. The most gratifying reward for our community service was seeing the teary and joyful faces of the people we served. I have been on 5 of these mission trips and have served in places like Cherokee, NC twice, Norfolk, Virginia twice, and in Louisiana. These trips have taught me many virtues such as leadership, responsibility, and integrity.
I am an athlete. In middle school, I was a member of the McGee’s Middle School football team my 7th and 8th grade year. My 8th grade year our team went 7-0 and finished our perfect season with a crucial win over Cleveland Middle. I also ran track in middle school, running the 100 meter hurdles, 4x400 meter relay and long jump. When I came to West Johnston I tried out for the basketball team. My sophomore year, I was put on the junior varsity team and led the team in scoring. My Junior year, I played behind most of the senior players on our varsity team and took the role as the 6th man. I was the 5th leading scorer. My last year, senior year, of basketball I started every game and led the team in scoring, rebounds, and blocked shots and won the Most Valuable Player award. I was one of the two Captains on our team and was also awarded the all conference academic award. I plan on attending Wake Tech Community College and trying out for the basketball team.
Throughout my high school career, I have maintained good grades and have taken all honors and AP level core classes. I have worked hard to earn a GPA of 4.175. My plans for the future are attending Wake Tech Community College and then transferring after two years and attending North Carolina State University and majoring in Law and Justice. I want to go into the criminology field. I have worked only one true job in my 18 years of life. I worked in Angier, NC at the Carlie C’s Grocery store for 1 year and 7 months. I was a bagger, stocker, and cashier. I had to leave that job after I moved towards 4042 because it was a 30 minute commute to and from work and I was spending too much gas on transportation. I was just recently hired at Burger King and have just started working. I am thankful for all of the opportunities that have been presented to me and I thank God for being there to guide me throughout my life.
